Influenced heavily by Ivan Illich and Joel Spring, Gabbard's work illuminates the limitations of state-mandated compulsory schooling, and he approaches most school reform measures as propaganda campaigns meant to mask an agenda bent on placing the work of teachers and the learning of students under greater centralized control.
